The Social Media Bowl

Mashable has some interesting stats on Twitter activity during Sunday night’s Super Bowl game. You would think that with so many people tuned in to watch a football game, most of the chatter would have been about football, right? Oddly enough, the answer is no. What were people tweeting about during the game? The commercials. Talk of the expensive ads dominated the conversation, taking up 42% of all Super Bowl related tweets.

What else were people tweeting about during the game? Here’s the breakdown, courtesy of Mashable:

  • 32% of tweets were about the halftime show, featuring Madonna and several other stars
  • 15% of tweets were about Patriots quarterback Tom Brady (Though more about his supermodel wife and less about his performance in the game!)
  • 4% of tweets were actually about the Giants winning the game
  • 0.8% of tweets were about two moments that occurred during the game

Most hardcore football fans would probably find this information to be pretty upsetting, since it’s supposed to be about the game. However, for marketers, these stats are pretty interesting. It just goes to show you that spending all that money on Super Bowl ad time can really pay off for a brand. You can be sure that talk of these ads didn’t die down after the game ended, either. People will be talking about their favourite ads for a long while yet. What do you think? Do Super Bowl ads really work for advertisers, or is it all just a bunch of hype? Will these brands stick in people’s minds over the long term, or is it over after the game ends? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
