What Twitter can teach you about writing.
Last week’s post was about how important it is for marketers and business owners to develop writing skills. Even if you aren’t writing your own website content or marketing materials, it’s still a skill you need to have. If you are sending emails to clients, you need to make sure that you can clearly communicate your ideas via the written word. The best way to improve your writing skills is to practice. That’s where Twitter comes in.
Twitter updates are limited to 140 characters. This is great for writing practice, because you’re only working with one idea at a time. In order to communicate that one idea and stay within the character limit, you need to learn how to be concise in your writing.
How do you learn to become more concise? Edit, edit, edit. As you practice, you’ll get better at spotting words that don’t work and can be taken out. You’ll also get better at finding new ways to say things. Your vocabulary will expand and soon you’ll find yourself having to consult the thesaurus a little less often.
The skills you learn from using Twitter will carry over into your other writing and you’ll soon notice that writing becomes easier for you. Even if you don’t need to tackle any huge copywriting tasks on your own, you’ll see that knowing how to write in a clear and concise manner will give you a huge advantage. Give it a try and see how it can help you become a better writer.
